Dreams about people who have died

Dreams about the dead are among the most common dreams people have, and among the hardest to wake from. Some bring back someone you have lost. Others show someone you love dying when they are alive and well. This page gathers every guide we have written on these dreams, grouped by situation, so you can go straight to the one that matches yours.
Why the dead appear in our dreams
Grief changes a relationship; it does not end it. The people we lose stay present in memory, habit and the voices we carry, and dreams are where that bond continues most openly. Jung approached every dream figure on two levels: as the real person, and as a part of the dreamer the psyche has borrowed. A dead mother can be your mother and also your own capacity for care. Dreams of someone dying who is still alive work differently. Death in a dream is one of the oldest images of change, and the guide to dreams about death sets out that wider symbol.

How to work with a grief dream
Write the dream down before you do anything else, including the feeling you woke with. Leave it a day before deciding what it means. Then ask what the person was like for you, what they did in the dream, and where that quality is present or missing in your life now. If a dream keeps returning, keep each version and compare them; the changes often show grief moving.
When to talk to someone
Most dreams about the dead are part of ordinary grief, painful as they can be. Speak to a GP, a therapist or a bereavement service if dreams make you dread sleep, if they replay a traumatic death, or if months on grief still leaves you unable to manage daily life. In the UK, Cruse Bereavement Support offers free help; hospices and doctors elsewhere can point you to local grief support. If you are having thoughts of ending your life, contact Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK or call 988 in the US.
Common questions
Is it normal to dream about someone who has died?
Yes. Dreams of the dead are among the most common dreams in grief, and they can continue for years. Many people find them comforting over time.
Does dreaming that someone dies mean they will die?
No. There is no reliable evidence that such dreams predict a death. In the Jungian method death in a dream usually pictures an ending or change inside the dreamer.
Why do I dream about people who have passed away?
Often because the relationship is still being worked through, or because something reminded you of them. The person may also stand for a quality you need now. The details of the dream shape the meaning.
