Dreaming about cheating on your partner

You wake up with your heart going, sure for a moment that you have done something terrible. In the dream you kissed someone, or slept with them, and your partner was somewhere off the edge of the scene. Then the relief, then the guilt anyway. Dreams of cheating on a partner are among the most common relationship dreams, and among the least literal. They are rarely a wish to leave.
Why you dream about cheating when you are happy
Dreams compensate. Jung's central observation was that the dream supplies what the waking attitude leaves out. If your waking life is organised around commitment, steadiness and keeping things good, the dream may bring in the opposite: novelty, risk, desire, freedom. That is not a recommendation. It is a correction of balance. A cheating dream can simply mean that some energy in you is not finding its way into your life, and the most vivid image the psyche has for “something else is calling” is another person.
Who is the other person?
This is the most useful question to put to the dream. Write down who it was and three things you associate with them. A colleague you admire for their confidence, an old friend who travels, a stranger who was simply kind. In Jungian terms the other person is often a carrier of a quality you are being asked to develop in yourself. Cheating on your partner with your boss may have more to do with ambition than attraction. Cheating with an ex may be about who you were then, which is covered in our guide to dreaming about your ex.
Dreaming about cheating on your husband
Long marriages bring their own version of this dream. When the shape of a life has been settled for years, by children, routines or shared work, the dream may return the dreamer to a part of herself that existed before or outside the marriage. Many people describe the other man as unremarkable, which is telling: the content is less about him than about being seen freshly, or being somewhere that is only yours. The dream asks what that would look like inside the life you have.
Dreaming about cheating on your boyfriend and feeling guilty
The guilt that follows the dream deserves attention in its own right. Sometimes it is simply the shock of an unfamiliar image. Sometimes it connects to something real but much smaller than an affair: a secret, a flirtation you have not mentioned, or a decision you have been making alone. And sometimes the guilt is about yourself, the sense of betraying your own needs by not voicing them. Ask which of these fits before deciding the dream is a moral warning. The same is true if you dream about cheating on your girlfriend.
What about dreaming your partner is cheating?
Being cheated on in a dream is a different dream with a different centre, usually fear of loss or of being replaced. It has its own page: dreaming your partner is cheating on you. If your partner is the one having the dream about you, see why your boyfriend keeps dreaming you cheat.
Is there a spiritual meaning to dreams about cheating?
Many traditions take dreams seriously as messages, and a cheating dream is often described in spiritual writing as a sign of divided loyalty. The Jungian view is close to that, but turned inward: the divided loyalty is usually between parts of yourself, such as duty and desire, or the life you have and a life you have not lived. It is a question about integrity in the old sense of the word, being whole.
What to do with the dream
Write it down before the feeling fades, including the place, the other person and what you felt during the dream rather than after it. Then ask what you were doing in the dream that you do not let yourself do awake. If the dream returns, it is worth tracking when; our guide to recurring dreams explains why repetition matters. You do not have to tell your partner about the dream, but some couples find it opens a good conversation about what each of them is missing.
A worked example: the colleague on the train
The dream below is invented for illustration. It shows the method, not anyone's real dream.
“I'm on a night train with Tom from work. We're laughing and I kiss him. I know my husband is in another carriage. Nobody is angry. The train goes through countryside I don't recognise and I feel completely free. I wake up sick with guilt.”
The image
A night train, a colleague, a kiss, a husband in another carriage, and an unknown landscape. The strongest feeling in the dream is freedom; the guilt arrives only on waking.
Associations
Tom, she says, has just left the company to start something of his own. She admires it. She has been talking about retraining for three years and keeps postponing it, partly because the family budget feels too tight.
What it compensates
The waking attitude is that the restlessness is selfish and should be put away. The dream, as one possibility, sets beside it the feeling of travelling somewhere new. The kiss joins her to what Tom carries: the nerve to begin. The husband is not betrayed; he is simply elsewhere on the same train.
A small practice
Write down the one concrete step towards retraining that she has avoided, and take it within the week. Then, if it feels right, tell her husband about the train, beginning with the countryside.
Common questions
Does dreaming about cheating mean I want to cheat?
Very rarely. Most cheating dreams use another person to stand for a need, a quality or a part of your life that is not being lived. The question to ask is what the other person represents for you.
Why do I feel so guilty after dreaming about cheating on my boyfriend?
The guilt may be the shock of an unfamiliar image, or it may point at something smaller and real, such as a secret or an unspoken need. Sometimes it is about betraying yourself by not saying what you want. Notice which fits before treating the dream as a warning.
What does it mean to dream about cheating on your husband?
In long relationships the dream often returns the dreamer to a part of themselves that lives outside the marriage. The other man is frequently unremarkable, which suggests the dream is about being seen freshly rather than about him. It asks how that part of you could have room in the life you share.
Should I tell my partner I dreamed about cheating?
You do not have to. Some couples find it opens a useful conversation about what each of them is missing, as long as it is shared as a dream and not a confession.
