Dreaming about an ex years later

You have not thought about them in a long time. You do not talk, perhaps you never will again, and you are not sure you would recognise them in the street. Then one night they are there in your dream, as vivid as if no time had passed. The surprise is part of the dream. Someone from years ago does not usually come back at random. The more useful question is not why them, but why now.

Why now?

Old figures in dreams tend to be summoned by the present. Before anything else, look at the week before the dream. Did you move house, start or end something, meet someone who reminded you of them, hear a song, visit a place? Very often the ex from years ago appears because your current life has touched a version of you that lived in that relationship. Jung called this the purposive side of dreams: they draw on the past in order to say something about now.

You are dreaming of who you were

When the ex is from long ago, the figure is often less about them than about your younger self. Who were you at nineteen or twenty-five, when you were together? More adventurous, more anxious, more hopeful, more reckless? The dream may be bringing back a quality you had then and set down. If the dream felt warm, it may be returning something good. If it felt painful, it may be showing an old pattern that is repeating in a new form.

Dreaming about an ex you don't talk to anymore

When contact ended abruptly, or by silence rather than conversation, the psyche often keeps the exchange open. Dreams of an ex you no longer speak to frequently stage what was never said: an apology, an accusation, a goodbye. It can be startling how ordinary these dreams are, the two of you simply catching up. That ordinariness is itself the point. The dream is finishing, inwardly, what could not be finished out loud. It is not an instruction to get back in touch.

Dreaming about an ex-boyfriend from years ago while in a relationship

An old boyfriend or girlfriend appearing in a dream while you are happily with someone else is extremely common, and it is rarely a verdict on the present relationship. It can mark a comparison the psyche is working through, a stage your current relationship has reached, or simply a contrast: who you were then and who you are now. If the dream unsettles you, ask what the old partner allowed in you that you feel less free to be now.

When the dream comes back more than once

A single dream of a long-gone ex is usually a passing echo. If the same person returns several times over a few months, the echo is stronger. Track the dates against what was happening. Many people find the dreams cluster around one theme in the present, such as a relationship reaching a new level of commitment, or a stretch of loneliness, and that the ex is the psyche's shorthand for it.

Is there a spiritual meaning?

Some writing describes dreams of a long-lost ex as a sign of a soul connection or unfinished karma. The Jungian view takes the same intuition, that something unfinished is asking for attention, and locates it in you. You do not need the other person to finish it. The work can be done inwardly, and the dream is often where it begins.

What to do with the dream

Write it down and note the date. Then write two lists: what was happening in your life just before the dream, and what you remember of yourself in that relationship. Look for the overlap. If there is something you never said to them, writing it in a letter you do not send is often enough. If the ex keeps returning, see our guide to recurring dreams and how to stop dreaming about your ex. For the wider question, including dreams of an ex with someone else, see the guide to dreaming about your ex.

A worked example: the ex at the old festival

The dream below is invented for illustration. It shows the method, not anyone's real dream.

“I'm at a music festival, the one we used to go to. My ex from university, Jamie, is there, exactly as he was. We're dancing in a field and I feel twenty again. Then I realise I've left my bag, with my work laptop in it, somewhere in the crowd. I don't go back for it.”

The image

A festival from student years, an ex unchanged by time, dancing in a field, and a work bag left behind without regret.

Associations

The dreamer has not spoken to Jamie in eleven years and feels nothing much about him. Last week she was promoted into a role with longer hours. She says she cannot remember the last time she did anything just for fun.

What it compensates

Her waking attitude is that the promotion is entirely good news. The dream, as one possibility, sets beside it the dancer she was, careless and joyful, and lets her leave the laptop behind. Jamie is the doorway to that time, not the point of it.

A small practice

Put on one song from that festival and listen to it all the way through, doing nothing else. Then write down one thing she did for fun at twenty that could fit into this month.

Common questions

Why am I dreaming about an ex from years ago?

Usually because something in your present has touched a version of you that lived in that relationship. Look at the days before the dream for an echo: a change, a new relationship, a place or a song. The dream is more often about who you were than about them.

What does it mean when you dream about an ex you don't talk to anymore?

When contact ended in silence, the psyche often keeps the conversation open. The dream may stage what was never said. It is a chance to finish the exchange inwardly, not an instruction to make contact.

Is dreaming about an ex years later a sign?

Not of anything about them, and not that you should get in touch. It is a sign that something from that time is asking for attention in your own life now.

Why do I dream about my ex-boyfriend from years ago when I am happy?

This is very common and rarely a comment on your current relationship. The old partner often stands for a stage of your life or a quality you had then, and the dream may be comparing or sorting rather than wishing.

What is Coniunctio?

A dream can stay with you all day and still make no sense. Coniunctio analyses it in Jung's method, symbol by symbol, so you can see what it is working on and what to do with it.

  • A Jungian analysis of your dream, symbol by symbol
  • A ritual to work with it: three offered, you choose one
  • Follow-up questions and notes on every analysis
  • A dream archive that grows as you feed it

“The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul, opening into that cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness.”
